First of all, everybody can do the conga and give a puppy a hug, because Harry Reid, the Worst Person on the Planet, has announced that he's retiring at the end of this term. 1 corrupt politician down, 300ish to go.

Also, I've been drawing anime character (heads) recently. I've used step-by-step guides for most of them, but I've also just looked at a reference and drawn some as well. I'm thinking about compiling them and posting them on DA.

And now for the bread and meat and vegetables of this journal entry:

thinkprogress.org/education/20…

It's a very rare occasion when I actually agree with the voice and reporting of a "ThinkProgress" website. This controversy actually happened a week  or so ago, but I've wanted to comment upon it now because reasons. LET THE RANT BEGIN.

"A New York high school is mired in controversy this week after a student delivered the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic, sparking outrage among classmates and locals who believe the pledge should only be delivered in English.

According to the Times Herald-Record, Pine Bush High School opened their announcements on Wednesday morning by allowing a student to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic, part of the school’s celebration of National Foreign Language Week. But students say the pledge, which was broadcast over the school’s intercom, resulted in “catcalls and angry denunciations” in several classrooms and online.

“The pledge should always be said in English,” one student tweeted. “They could’ve just said ‘Good Morning’ in a different language each day.”

Local members of the American Legion, a veterans organization, also blasted the decision.

“This is America, and we speak English in America,” post Commander Andrew Brew told reporters."

Let me tell you what is wrong with all of this.

-an official said that complaints were received from people who lost family in Afghanistan. There's problem #1: they don't speak Arabic in Afghanistan. They speak Pashto. It's like getting offended at hearing the US Pledge said in Chinese because you lost family to the Japanese Empire in World War II. Different different languages, different cultures, different countries, dude.
-An amount of conservatives appear to support this notion: "I
n America, we speak English. Reciting the Pledge in other languages is offensive to those who founded this country. There is no such thing as African-American, Mexican-American, etc. You're either American or you're not. Period. To recite it in Arabic is absolutely ludicrous. It is insulting to the men and women who have fought, died, and are still fighting in the Middle East. If I were to go to Afghanistan and tell them to sing their National Anthem (or whatever it is they have there), but tell them to do it in English, I would probably be beheaded. All of this politically correct propaganda crap needs to STOP."</i>
1. America is not England. Yes, the de facto language is English, and it's what most people speak, but surprise surprise, there are also a LOT of people who speak languages that are NOT English. America is supposed to be one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world. What is so wrong with people who've migrated here legally and lived here for generations being proud of both their heritage and their current home? If a family moves to the US from, say, South Korea, and they want to say the US Pledge in their natural language because it's their native tongue and they're proud of now being Americans, what is so wrong with that?
2. The people who founded this country lived and died 150 years before the US Pledge came into existence as the US Pledge.
3. Arabic is a language that existed before Islam came into existence. Arabic is also a language spoken by people in the Middle East who are not terrorists. You know, the plenty of people who are being screwed over by their governments. (See, Northern Africa).
4. There is a difference between believing the Islamic Terrorists are just misguided, disaffected people who are rationally outraged at the EVEELZ America has done and punishing those who think otherwise, and simply freaking reciting the US Pledge in a different language for National Foreign Language Week.

"
Conservative media outlets were quick to leap on the story, some specifically taking issue with the use of the word “Allah” in the pledge, the Arabic word for God. Others, such as Dr. Zuhdi Jasser of the Islamic Forum for Democracy, implied to Fox News that saying the pledge in Arabic might encourage “Muslim youth” to join ISIS, the radical militant group currently terrorizing whole sections of the Middle East.</p>

“We are at war with radical Islam which uses the Arabic language,” he said. “Those kids probably didn’t know what they were saying…But what they were saying would be lost in translation. It’s the exact core of what we’re fighting.”</i>
1. Holy freak. "Allah" is simply the word for "god" in Arabic. It does not automatically mean the Muslim God. It doesn't matter what you believe about God or if you don't believe in Him or Her or Them Or It at all. "Allah" simply means "god". When Christians whose native tongue is Arabic are praying to their Deity, they don't say "God", they say "Allah", but they are still praying to the Christian God. "Kami" is the word for god in Japanese. If we start saying "Kami" are we going to turn into radical murderous Buddhists (They probably exist. Like, maybe 3 or 4 of them somewhere)?
2. How IN THE WORLD does saying the nationalistic, American Pledge in Arabic make Muslim youth want to join ISIS, a terrorist organization that HATES America and wants to burn it to the ground? Do these people think that saying something in Arabic automatically makes you a Muslim terrorist or terrorist sympathizer? Do these people not understand how language works?
3. We're not fighting the Arabic Language. Yes, ISIS speaks Arabic, but so do plenty of other countries and people who do are not ISIS. If they recited it in a code language developed by ISIS, then I could validate the outrage. But Arabic has so much more history behind it then just ISIS.
4. The kids don't know what they're saying? Well, they may not understand the vocabulary and syntax of Arabic, but if they're told that they're reciting the Pledge in Arabic, then they probably know that THEY'RE RECITING THE PLEDGE IN ARABIC.

Look, there are PLENTY of retarded school principals and school boards doing actually harmful and ridiculous things to our students and schools. This is not one of them.

All in all, America is a country of many different cultures, languages, and beliefs. Yes, you should learn English if you're going to live here. But you don't have to be a crazy nationalist to live in America, nor to support her and her endeavors.

BONUS RANT: Let's say there's this white male rapper, who says on Twitter that he hates black Americans and everything else about this
country. Sounds pretty awful, right? Well, let's say a female, black blogger called this man out for his racism and insanity. Well, this white male rapper, being the mature human being he is, decides to send images of his genitals to this female black blogger over twitter, and then proceed to tweet sexual messages about her to the woman's husband. Sounds totally sexist and inappropriate, right? Wouldn't it be the craziest thing if the Left-wing Media decided to NOT pick this story up?

Hah. Hah hah hah. Hah hah!

Also, this quote from Mitt, referring to his boxing match for charity: "I can fight anybody so long as Candy Crowley isn’t the referee".

With all this good publicity Mitt's doing, I can't help but speculate that he's just letting the Republicans kill each other while he stays out of the limelight, then announce he's running for president again. Hillary's looking nowhere as invincible as she did a while back. I'm too cautious to get my hopes up.

Le STOLEN from :iconvikingponeswordgirl: !!!!!

1. ONE OF YOUR SCARS, HOW DID YOU GET IT?
Well, I don't have any traditional scars. I have plenty of burns and minor cuts from working in Chick-Fil-A's kitchen. I guess the closest thing would be the part on my arm where the need was stuck in for hard heroin baby donating plasma. After nearly a year, it's finally starting to go away.

2. WHAT IS ON THE WALLS IN YOUR ROOM?
Anime posters. LOTS of them. Code Geass, Angel Beats, Spice and Wolf, Death Note, Haruhi Suzumiya no Yuuutsu, Hunter x Hunter, Attack on Titan, Ouran High School Host Club, Parasyte, and of course Fullmetal Alchemist. Oh, and a huge Studio C poster as well.

3. DO YOU SNORE, GRIND YOUR TEETH, OR TALK IN YOUR SLEEP?
According to my brother, I snore. Well, he speaks in Gibberishian!

4. WHAT TYPE OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO?
An odd assortment, I've been told. I listen to mainly progressive rock (Rush, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, etc.), but I also like listening to J-rock and J-pop, if I think it sounds good. Usually it's because it's from an anime I've seen. I also like 80's pop, 80's rock, and some other stuff here and there. Oh, and JAZZ. I freaking love jazz.

5. DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME YOU WERE BORN?
1:17:28 AM. I was there, after all.

6. WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE THAN ANYTHING RIGHT NOW?
The motivation to draw and to write so freaking much until I have gotten good at both. Like, seriously. XP

15. WHERE CAN YOU SEE YOURSELF PROPOSING?
In Mormon culture there's this thing where you have to do something really complicated like perform open heart surgery while climbing Mt. Everest and singing 2112 by Rush AND tap dancing and then propose. I'm thinking, nah. Marriage is something I would discuss with my partner a lot before I propose. "Hey bae, what you say, you and meh get mareeed?"

While on the Internet I can come off as caustic, in real life I'm very mild. Having Asperger's and OCD, I'm too introverted to make any sort of comment I would make without hesitation on the Internet. Keep that in mind.

I'm watching you because despite you being a conservative one, your amazing debating skills gained my respect.

Despite me supporting gay marriage... I somewhat see your point of view about marriage being 1 man + 1 woman. I don't know why.

Hey, I remember in a journal of mine you told me that, after I had recommended the anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica to you, that you sadly ended up hating it :(

I don't hate you for your anime preferences, and I respect your opinion for not liking the show all too well.
I myself didn't truly appreciate the ending of the anime. And I hear the movie ending isn't all to great either.

I'm sorry too that my recommendation didn't work out well for you.

But, I'm curious to hear what your reasoning was for not liking the anime and what had caused you to hate it.
:D

I'm open for honest opinions

It's okay. It's my fault for continuing to watch it. I wouldn't have hated it so much if I just dropped it.

Off the top of my head:
-It being a "deconstruction". Sure, it deconstructs some magical girl elements in the beginning. Then it goes full darker and edgier. Being dark and edgy doesn't automatically a deconstruction make. In place of a coherent plot and believable characters, constant easily-foreseeable shock value is put in place. Once you realize Gen Urobutcher is making this stuff, you see it all coming.
-The hype: they say hype can kill a good movie (like Frozen), or show, or video game, or whatever. I believe that happened here. I've seen soooooooo many people act like this is a freaking masterpiece and that anyone who doesn't like it just isn't mature enough to understand it. BUTTKISS. I think Code Geass is extremely well done, but I'm not going to insult someone just because they don't like it or don't think it's as good as I think it is.
-The characters: Madoka is just constantly crying, Sayaka goes full nihilist for not very good reasons, Mami wasn't around long enough for her death to be emotionally painful, Homura's obsession with Madoka isn't very well-defined, and I just couldn't take it seriously. I really liked Kyouko at first, but then I felt the people writing her got lazy and started caring more about pandering than making her true to herself. The characters aren't terrible, but they drag down an already weak show, IMO.
-The "romance". Granted, I would've hated the romance in this show a lot more if it was actually well-written, because I can't stand yuri, but the writer in me still wants to pull his hair out when it happens in this show. Ugh... do I even have to explain why? I can if you want to, but it's going to get me all riled up.
-The nudity: I really hate this trend in anime where children and young teens are increasingly sexualized. As little as it was in PMMM, I hated it.
-My own personal enjoyment: or rather lack thereof. Sure, there were some cool parts, I liked Kyouko at first, and the animation was spectacular. But at several points near the latter half of the series, I couldn't help but asking myself, "I'm not enjoying watching this. I'm supposed to be enjoying myself, aren't I?" Again, any normal person would just stop watching the show. But everybody and their mother kept telling me "DEWD IT'S JUST SO AMAZING", so I figured it'd get better. It didn't for me.

Well, that's all I can think of right now.

Also, I like your signature.

Well, I understand your reasons for disliking the show. :)

Some reasons I myself never paid attention to while watching it and reading the manga.

But I must say, the amount of hatred you feel towards PMMM is similar to the amount of hatred I feel for this shitty anime Panty and Stocking.

I wouldn't even recommend that rancid pile of dog sh*t to my very worst enemy.

If we're talking about marriage and making families, then yes. It's only natural for men and women to come together. Does acknowledging this fact make me a "dick"? I guess those who accept evolution are "dicks" as well.

totally obscure lost reference

But in all seriousness, that's awesome! Did they hunt you down, or did you find them and invite them?
Try to go easy on them, won't ya? They're young kids trained to teach the Gospel; they don't have degrees in apologetics and debate. X)

I literally came across them just hanging out at the front at Walmart. Two young dudes just a year or two older than me, white shirt and a tie, you couldn't mistake 'em. So I just went up to them and said hi and gave them my contacts just like that.

And of course; it crushes my heart when I see so many insensitive videos on YouTube of smart-alecks who know next to nothing about the religion harassing missionaries. I just hope I don't break their spirits if I tell them I'm mostly just seeking to learn more rather than get baptized (which is possible, but seems pretty unlikely at this point). Plus, I need a physical copy of the Book of Mormon anyway.

Ha, I see. They might've gotten really excited since you just walked up to them (making their job much easier), but I'm sure if you tell them you just want to learn and don't intend to get baptized, they'll still be happy to talk to you. Unless this is their first week of course. XD

Yeah. That kind of thing drives me crazy, so I try to avoid watching it altogether.
